Habitat Young Leaders Build 2019

Habitat Young Leaders Build (HYLB) is the largest youth movement in the Asia Pacific region that brings together young people to support families and communities in need of decent housing. This movement has motivated young people to volunteer, fundraise, raise awareness and add their voice in support of affordable housing.

This year, the theme of the HYLB is “Habitat supporters will speak out about housing’s role in building sustainable, resilient, and safe communities.” Since 5th December 2018, Habitat Cambodia has launched and started to roll-out the campaign across Cambodia through educational roadshows at 19 local and international schools/universities in order to educate the youth about the importance of decent housing and why young people like them need to be involved in the campaign. The campaign was running across 6 different locations – Phnom Penh/Kandal, Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, and Tbong Khmum province and have mobilized 5,410 volunteers, engaged 4,873 participants to play a part, take lead, and share their commitment to helping families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.

With the 5,410 volunteers, the HYLB has served 422 families through house repair, painting, and upgrading. The volunteers also helped repainting three primary schools and educated 1,528 children about hygiene and sanitation. Moreover, Habitat Cambodia also offered two micro-grants to the successful proposals that showed commitment and willingness to support their communities. Through their leadership, they organized many activities by mobilizing other volunteers within the communities to come and work together and raised awareness about the safety of living in the community in terms of landmine and ERW. In addition, this HYLB campaign has also led to successful partnerships with the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, district governors, and local authorities.
